Parks and Recreation Overview
The City of Garden City Parks and Recreation Department oversees many activities, facilities and parks. Among them include the Civic Ice Arena, Maplewood Community / Senior Center, and Famility Resource Center. Our mission is to provide recreational opportunities that enhance the quality of life and meet the needs of its citizens through high level programs, facilities, and professional staff. The community park system consists of approximately 209 acres: 101 acres owned by the City, and 108 acres owned by the School District and several parochial schools. The Parks and Recreation Department works closely with the School District and volunteer organizations to assure full utilization of municipal and school facilities.
MINI PARKS: Garden City has approximately 22.8 acres of small parks (Arcola, Helen, Florence, Douglas, Lather Marquette Center, St. Raphael, St. Dunstan's and Kiwanis) that range in size from .4 acres to 5 acres and serve as mini-parks.
NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS: In Garden City, neighborhood parks range in size from seven to thirty acres in size. There are eight school-owned and City-owned parks (Garden City Junio High, Burger Center, Farmington, Henry Ruff, Memorial, Moeller Field, Maplewood Center, and Rotary Park) that provide approximate 78.5 acres of neighborhood parks. In addition, Schoolcraft College provides an additional 22 acres of land available for recreation purposes.
COMMUNITY PARKS: Two park facilities, the Garden City Park and the Garden City High School serve as community parks totaling approximately 85 acres of community park land.
The Parks and Recreation Staff; volunteer organizations such as Garden City Youth Athletic Association; Garden City Soccer Club, Garden City Hockey Association, Garden City Figure Skating Club; and our advisory boards, Commission on Aging, Recreation Commission and Community Coalition strive to plan and support a wide range of activities for all age groups.
