The USS Constellation Museum is the steward of the 1854 US Sloop-of-War Constellation. It is also the custodian of all related artifacts, materials, and histories from the Baltimore-built Frigate Constellation of 1797, to the 1960s-era aircraft carrier Constellation CVA-64, celebrating over 200 years of naval history.

The primary artifact and central focus of the Museum is the US Sloop-of-War Constellation, the second of the three ships to carry the same venerable name. Constellation is the last all-sail warship built for the US Navy, and one of two vessels still afloat that, prior to the Civil War, served in the US African Squadron fighting the illegal slave trade. Also, Constellation is the only ship still afloat that was active during the Civil War and is the largest example of Chesapeake Bay wooden shipbuilding in existence. Over 2000 artifacts and ephemera related to Constellation, and naval history in general, are in the Museum's care.

The Museum staff is responsible for routine maintenance and the long-term preservation of the ship, while promoting the Museum as an attraction to the public and securing resources for the immediate and long term financial stability of the organization. Other staff duties include overseeing restoration of the vessel and accompanying exhibit development, preservation and care of the Museum's collection, the development and implementation of educational programming for school and youth groups, and providing job training and service learning opportunities for "at-risk" youth from Baltimore City.
