THE TERROR TRAIL
Nightly during October

This spooky tour features tales of local murders, spectral assaults, and haunted houses. The one-hour and twenty minute candlelit walk, developed by Witch Trial Trail creator Jim McAllister, includes the stories of "Crayon Boy," the "Sheriff", and other alleged haunters of local buildings; the eerie saga of the phantom crew of the fishing schooner Andrew Johnson; and a number of bizarre episodes related to the Salem Witch Trials. Patrons will also hear the story- and learn the "story behind the story" of a famous local murder.

Each Terror Trail tour is limited to 35 people and reservations are required. This year we begin taking reservations May 1. You may reserve by e-mail (jim@nii.net) or, if you don't have e-mail, telephone (978)745-6314. If the time and date you requested are available, you will be asked to send a check or money order to Jim McAllister 86 Federal Street Salem, MA. 01970 for the full amount to reserve your space(s). The cost for adults is $12, for ages 7-17 $5. Candles are provided.

Once we receive your check or money order, we will send you a confirmation via e-mail or, if necessary, in writing and directions as to where to meet your tour guide.

In the event you cancel your reservation a full week (seven days) or more before your scheduled tour we will refund 75% of your money. No refunds will be given for cancellations less than seven before your scheduled tour. In the event we are forced to cancel your tour due to severely inclement weather, you will be mailed a full refund immediately.

MEET OUR GUIDES

Our tours are conducted by some of the area's premier tour guides:

Merrill Kohlhoffer has performed as a professional storyteller throughout New England for more than a decade. He has also worked as a guide at two Salem museums: The House of the Seven Gables and at the Stephen Phillips Memorial Trust House.

Jim McAllister has conducted over 400 tours of Salem since founding Derby Square Tours in 1983. He is also a part-time teacher, a history columnist for the Salem Evening News, and author of one Salem history book and co-author of another. He has appeared on the History Channel and many other television shows relating to local history and hauntings.

Bill Sano, a retired teacher, has led Salem and Boston tours for over 25 years and has taught courses at local colleges and adult education programs. Bill, who once made a pilgrimage to Transylvania, is fascinated by the Salem witch trials and feels he may have been alive during that time in an earlier life..

Herb Van Dam has worked as a full time professional guide in the greater Boston and Rhode Island region for seventeen years. He has also had successful careers as a stand-up comic, an actor, and a secretary to former Massachusetts governor Michael Dukakis. Herb claims to be most proud of the fact that he once shook John Lennon's hand.
