At a time when online travel agencies are all the rage and airlines are threatened by bankruptcy, Decatur Travel Agency is relieved that it hasn’t hit any rough waves. The success, says co-owner Richard Felner, is thanks to the agency’s emphasis on customer service.
Without a Travel Agent, You are on Your Own.

“I’ve had any number of people say I was trying to do this on the Internet and got all frustrated and decided to use a travel agent,” said Felner.

That’s one of the reasons, Felner says, that this agency has adopted the motto: “Without a travel agent, you’re on your own.” “Our clients are well versed in Internet travel searches but when they are ready to spend their money, they want an agent for advice and guidance.”

Mark Rusch, 71, and his wife, Mary, have worked through Decatur Travel to arrange several trips. “You can do just about everything you want online and do it cheaper,” said Rusch. “But if you’re away and something isn’t going right, if you don’t have an agent you can call, you’re going to have to solve it yourself - and that can be difficult.”

Working through a travel agency, FeIner says, makes for more personalized service.

The World Wide Web lacks two key elements: “Face-to-face conversation and telephone conversation. Only agents can offer that kind of service,” he said. “Personally, I would feel a lot better talking face to face. Dealing with a machine is frustrating at best.”
