Braddock Point Light
Braddock Point Light
The opportunity of owning an historical lighthouse has just become available. Braddock Point Lighthouse built in 1895 is now for sale. This functional jewel was totally restored back to the beautiful Victorian keepers dwelling it was. By using the original Coast Guard blue prints of 1895, the meticulous renovation took 8 years. All mechanicals were replaced in this 3,000 sq. foot home. All rooms were remodeled as they were originally designed.
When it was originally built, it was referred to as the brightest light on Lake Ontario. The light is now a shining beacon to keep ships and pleasure boats safe. Located 15 miles west of Rochester, N.Y., on Lake Ontario, an easy 20 minute ride from Rochester International Airport. The lighthouse is in a very private, park like setting with mature trees, slate terraces and a circular driveway. The keepers dwelling consists of 3 or 4 bedrooms, 2 ½ baths, large eat in kitchen, butler’s pantry, 2nd pantry, formal dining room, parlor, keepers office and 3 fireplaces.
Lake side there is an all glass octagon shaped room with a 180 degree view of beautiful Lake Ontario. The sunsets are the most beautiful and romantic ever. There is an 1800 sq. foot carriage house with a 6 car attached garage. This unbelievable piece of history could be a great get away, a full time residence or possibly a bed and breakfast. For those of us that have ever dreamed of living in a lighthouse, this could be a dream come true.
History
The Braddock Point Light is just west of Braddock Bay. The light actually stands on nearby Bogus Point, which extends further into the lake. The light was built to guide ships traveling to and from Rochester, NY and the Welland Canal in Ontario. The ornate 110-foot tower and Victorian residence was completed in 1896.
The tower was equipped with a third-and-a-half order Fresnel lens, making it one of the brightest lights on Lake Ontario. The light was a copy of the Cleveland Light, which was torn down in 1895. The lens, lantern, and metal work were taken from that light. (Clifford, "19th Century Lights", p. 266)
The light was removed from service in 1954, and the Coast Guard removed the top two-thirds of the weather-beaten tower, due to structural damage. The house and tower fell into disrepair due to neglect and vandalism.
In February 1986, Robert and Barbara Thulin, with their two sons, became the new owners. They lived in the house for two years before they felt ready to tackle the tremendous job that was ahead of them. For eight years, the remodeling went on: replacing structural walls and pocket-doors; making new moldings and replacing wainscoting. The work seemed endless, but finally the interior of the house was completed.
After many conversations with the United States Coast Guard, the time had come to erect the tower again. On February 28, 1998, the new tower was lit, and the Braddock Point light was officially an Aid to Navigation again!
